(Ro-)BOTS- Reflecting on the ‘bots’ exercise

What is a bot and how often do you think you interact with bots in your daily life?

According to TechTarget’s “WhatIs?” website, a bot is a program that “operates as an agent for a user or other program or to simulate a human activity”. Bots can operate without human interaction, as they are used to automate specific tasks. Due to not requiring human interaction for its operation, bots can be accessed 24/7, which is why they are so common nowadays.

A few examples of bots include:

  • Chatbots (Simulates conversations with humans)
  • Spiders (Scans and gather content from websites to help search engines answer users’ queries)
  • Shopbots (Finds the best prices for a product)

In what other ways do you think bots could play a different role in your practice or daily life?

As time goes on bots are becoming a bigger part of people’s lives as the digital world and physical world are coming together. This can be seen as a good thing because time consuming tasks can now be completed in shorter amounts of time. However the rapid increase in bots also means a rapid decrease in jobs as bots are slowly replacing humans in certain job fields.
